Bleibt alles anders

Saturday, 23. January 2010 at 11:37

Bleibt alles anders is a song title from German singer Herbert Grönemeyer and means “Everything stays different”. I had a time in my life where I used to listen to his songs very, very often and allthough I still really like his music, I rarely do anymore. The past few weeks I thought a lot about my life, how it has been and how I want it to bee in the future, and didn’t really have the time and leisure to write any posts. But I’ll try to blog more often.

A lesson, that I learnt in the past weeks and months is that our home is my anchor. And luckily I didn’t stop making plans what and how to change, to keep our home the place it is. I’ve been buying paintings and drawings and prints on Etsy, I now started framing and hanging them up.

Choisis la Joie by evajuliet. Apple Blossoms and Wilfred Was Lacking in Social Graces by Wren & Chickadee. Cactus garden and A flower for you by joojoo. Amour D’Abre and Cherry Blossoms (not available anymore) by Jennybeans.

Update

Monday, 2. November 2009 at 18:41

Not that we haven’t done anything in Octobre, we re-organized and decorated two rooms, bought new furniture and removed old furniture instead and had like a hundred things to do until we were really “done” (or at least it felt like it were a hundred todos). But there wasn’t really anything that I could actually take pictures of or show you so it was quite still on this blog the past month.

Two weeks ago I found a sideboard on a nearby bulky refuse and couldn’t resist to take it with us allthough I didn’t like its shape at all. But the good thing was that I felt that I had nothing to lose and therefore chose a colour I would have never chosen for a piece of furniture I actually already liked befor painting it.

sideboard

Yes, it’s yellow. And I actually really like it. It’s now in our sleeping room and waits for some new knobs.

I’ve already made some changes in our sleeping room and I’m quite sure that I’ll show you more pictures of this room in the next few weeks and months, as it is going to get a huge makeover.

I also did some crocheting in Octobre, but didn’t finish anything.

cushion covers

I started these two cushion covers, but still need to crochet their backs.

I hope I can now start blogging regularly again and keep you posted on the projects and renovations we’re up to. In the course of that I also wanted to say a big thank you to every one who regularly reads my blog and espeacially to those who leave comments. I don’t answer every single one, but I’m always so happy when someone leaves a comment. So thank you everyone!

Stool cover

Sunday, 13. September 2009 at 09:11

The granny square blanket has now reached a third of the size I want it to be when it’s finished. And in this size, it just perfectly fits on our smaller sofa and brings some colour into the living room. So I decided to insert a smaller crochet project. One thing I brought with me from Braunschweig is this little IKEA rattan stool I had in my room when I was a teenager. My mother finally wanted to get rid of it and so I took it with me. Unfortunately the colour of it doesn’t fit in our livingroom at all and so I decided to crochet a cover for it.

stool_cover

This is just the top, I’ll add the sides in the next few days. For the first five rounds I used a pattern by Sarah London and then I’ll just improvised.

stool_cover_detail

I’ve already added another five rounds. Maybe I’ll get it done by the end of next week.

We’re going to spend the next few days in Braunschweig, in Northern Germany, and stay with my family. In order to post at least a few new facts about our living room, here is another sneak peek.

living room

I bought the chest of drawers at eBay two weeks ago for 40 Euros. The seller was a turkish woman who told me that her husband had driven the piece three years ago all the way from Turkey to Germany. And now they’re moving back to Turkey and he refuses to drive all the way back by car just for this chest of drawers.

Although I’ve got quite a weakness for painted furniture, I like this chest of drawers just the way it is and therefore won’t change it. In the course of this week I’ll try buying some fabric for our curtains and hopefully will be able to start with the corridor without having a bad conscience.

See you next week!

Patchworking

Sunday, 16. August 2009 at 17:35

It took me the whole day yesterday but finally the patchwork of my first quilt is done.

patchwork

As I didn’t have any instructions I just had to give things a try and kept on sewing and ripping until I finally got the hang of it. Allthough not all the corners are matching a 100% I think the overall look is pretty good.

And here’s another picture that gives an impression on how the quilt will cover our bed:

I’ll need to add a binding and a backing, for which I’ll probably just use some plain and simple cloth. And then I’ll have to think about how I want the quilt to be quilted, but I think I’ll keep it simple and will just hand quilt the edges. And when I’m done, the sleeping room might already be renovated and re-decorated! In one and a half weeks I’ll finally have my free days from work and from then on, nothing in our apartment will be safe!

Relax!

Sunday, 9. August 2009 at 14:55

I’m currently working on the last bits of my Bachelor Thesis. Or actually, this is what I should be doing, as time is getting short. I always tend to procrastinate and therefor I haven’t really written more than just a few pages. And although I have already signed the new contract of employment and it doesn’t even depend on a mark or the quality of the Thesis, I am stressed and need something to do at home to relax and keep my thoughts busy with other things than work. The last few days I kept on crocheting granny squares and now got 30 squares, from which I have already sewn together 25 squares.

By the way, I did not use slip stitches to sew them but just sewed them like you would sew fabric. I tried the slip-stitch-method, but the seams weren’t flat at all and I just didn’t like the look of it.

Furthermore, all the fabrics arrived today, with which I’ll try to sew my first quilt.

I really hope I’ll figure it out how to quilt and sew patchwork. If successful, it’s going to be a lovely cover for our bed in the new sleeping room!

Oh, the fabrics are by Tanya Whelan for Freespirit and are from the “Darla” collection.

red red red

Thursday, 6. August 2009 at 22:35

It’s kind of funny how dominant the color red is in our living room. I would have neither ever considered red one of my favourite colours, nor have planned including so much red in the room. Everything started with the cover of our armchair that I changed from IKEA Rosali to red and white stripes (yet still from the IKEA Rosali(nda) collection), as the flowery pattern didn’t really fit to the new grey wall color.

The day befor yesterday finally arrived the Keep Calm And Carry On poster, this time it has the right size and I instantly framed it and hung it.

The chest of drawers next to the armoire might look familiar to some of you – it changed it’s place in the sleeping room with the white glass cabinet which now stands next to our bed. The glass cabinet didn’t really look good next to this quite huge armoire but definitely brings some colour in our living room and has already brought some new ideas to my mind.

With the letter cushions I am quite pleased. I think they look so much better in the arm chair. In front of the old light violetly painted walls the colours of the cushions looked a bit pale, but now they seam to shine.

Still, there is a LOT to do and I still haven’t done everything I wanted to (Will I ever have? I’m dropping the same phrase in every post again and again …),  but hopefully I’ll have some time soon. At least the Hezleins are now living in their new bunny hutch, even if it’s still a bit provisional.

In three weeks I’ll finally have my well-deserved holiday and in order that I won’t be bored I ordered a bunch of fabrics so that I can try to sew my first quilt. In addition to the usual renovating of course.
